My husband just bought some empower glasses and so far, so good! He also got separate distance AND reading glasses ( he saw the empower glasses AFTER he ordered the others). . . . Maybe that is not too bad a thing, although costly. He has Parkinson's disease and has trouble using glasses when walking and using stairs. He is liking the empower glasses so far ( 2days ) .

@Oscar: I'm glad you have been successful with the emPower lens and I hope that continues but I definitely agree that you need a back-up. So far, it sounds like these spend more time in repair than on your face. Given the reported poor optical quality of these lenses, may I ask what problems you were having before that these lenses have addressed?

@MW: I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties with the glasses. Even if the technology worked as advertised, these lenses aren't really beneficial for the VDT because the added power is down lower in the lens and most people are looking through the distance portion of the lens when viewing the computer. Because of that, you almost have to get a pair of glasses dedicated to computer if/when you have discomfort at the computer. Otherwise you will have to tilt your head back to get into the reading power which can be uncomfortable if you use the computer for a substantial part of the day.

There are several computer lens designs that work pretty well in the office environment for most people without constantly having to swap glasses and forth every time you get up. Ask your optometrist about other options.

I bought these for the sole purpose of wearing at work. I sit in front of 3 LCD monitors (computer) all day long. I am very disappointed in these glasses. They work great for reading labels, books, print, the speedometer in my car. In front of the computer they are horrible. The "intermediate" portion of the lenses is so blurry, using them at the computer is additional eye strain and frustration. They are more blurry than my uncorrected intermediate vision. I feel less eye strain without these glasses than with. They work well for anything but computer work. Would I spend the $1250 again? Absolutely not. The accelerometer in them is useless. It changes at ridiculous angles making the intermediate portion of the lense useless in auto mode. I am very disappointed in these glasses. Even more so that I cannot get a refund on them. The best I can get is replacement progressive glasses. I already have them, I dont need more It was money wasted. If you dont need to do computer work, they might be for you. In this day and age who doesn't need to do computer work???

So I have been using the empower glasses for a few months now. It was life changing for me. They worked great with the ocassional glitch where I had to reset the lenses (easy to do by the way you just lay them on a table for a few seconds)... I was really happy even after the $1400 they costed me. However I experienced an issue with one of the lenses and had to send them to the lab.. I have been without them for 3 weeks and I still have one more week to go. They had to redo them twice, everything is cov er under warranty etc... but I really miss them.

My advice would be that if you buy them, have some plan B just in case. I don;t think you'll experience any issues with distances if your doctor does a good job of assesing your prescription.

Michelle,
No, I have not seen the product since the prototype. I'm not sure the empower lenses are out yet. There are several doctors on Optcom list (a mailing list for optometrists) that have mentioned carrying them but no one has reported back on their experience so far. A while back a doctor that dispensed a Superfocus lens said his patient was not please with it but I don't know what their complaints were. As for your lenses, it is almost impossible to correct for a 12-18" working distance without going to a dedicated pair of glasses for that task. Can you use a lighted magnifier with an adjustable arm like a jeweler's sometimes use to get the detail you need at a longer working distance?

Nice review. My husband/office manager and I went to the Pixel Optics training seminar yesterday. We have never been so conflicted about a product. It is great technology. Do we want to sell it? You make a good point about setting a "power boost" higher in the lens.

Thanks for your opinion. I am pondering getting the empower glasses or superfocus. I am a glass fusing artist and do most of my work between 12-18" away looking downward at the table. 2 years ago I tried progressives and they drove me insane. I've had perfect vision up to 48yrs and I'm 54 now and I have tri-focals. I need to upgrade my perscription so I'm in the market for new glassses and I really don't want to deal with 2 glasses. Reading books and catalogs to get design ideas does drive me a little crazy too because I scan so fast that my eyes can't keep up with my head moving around.
I know it's only an opinion because you have not seen me but have you worked with either glasses since you saw the prototype?
My eye doctor suggested 2 different glasses.
Thanks

Great job pulling all this info together. Especially the relevant links.

Sadly, here in Florida we can't make a snowman, but maybe I'll post a picture of a sandcastle! :)

What a terrific story Marcia - thank you so very much for sharing. Bob has a few years on me, but I anticipate continuing in the same tradition. Optometry has changed a huge amount and we need to continue to record our history from those who are able to pass along this knowledge. You did well and are quite a story-teller yourself, it would seem.

I was overwhelmed by Marcia's flattering blog and appreciate all the favorable comments it evoked. Had I know this little jaunt would have attracted so much attention I'd have extended it! Maybe on my 87th I'll do it again and catch the places and people I didn't get to this time.
